Morondava

Another cultural distinctive of the Sakalava people is the way they build tombs - traditionally walled squares made of wood, they are carved to represent scenes from the deceased's life and interests. This is a modern take - cement, and painted. :)
The roadside bar/general store - I loved the brilliant colors of this one
The chameleon I spotted from the road - he's a good-sized fellow - about a foot long. The Malagasy don't eat chameleons, so they're still fairly plentiful.
Morondava is the capital of the Menabe region, on the coast. We stayed in these cute little bungalows for the two nights we were there. Ours was the closest in this picture, and is about 10 feet from the water at highest tide. The view from the bungalow's front porch. Morondava was hit by Cyclone Gaffilo in 2004, and my guide book said it was picking up the pieces and moving on. I beg to differ. Moving on, yes. Picking up the pieces, no. This seems to be the remains of a bathroom of the last structure on this site. :)
